Hello friends! Today I wanted to share what books I read during the month of June. It was a great reading month for me, and I read a lot of books I had on my summer reading list.
I had quite a bit of reading time this month because we took a road trip to Destin, Florida. I also listened to Harry Potter books on audiobook on the way down there, but I didn’t list them here, because I’ve read/listened to them a few times now and they are some of my favorites! I only included new books in this post, and my thoughts on them.

What books I read in June
Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate
Before We Were Yours grabbed me from the very beginning, and I ended up reading the entire book in a single day. I loved this heartbreakingly beautiful story about the Foss children. It’s a work of fiction, but it’s based on true stories about Georgia Tann, a child trafficker who operated an orphanage where unimaginable abuse takes place. This book is sad and hard to read at times, but so well written and the ending is great. Highly recommend!
Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton
Next Year in Havana was just meh for me. I really wanted a cute chick lit novel set in a historical setting, but it just felt like the history of Cuba with some cheesy bits mixed in. I did feel like I learned a lot about Fidel Castro and the history of Cuba, which is great, but wasn’t what I was expecting. The writing style was not for me, the tropes were not for me…this book was just not for me. It had so much potential, but the writing was just not there.
With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo
This was such a great book. I commented on Goodreads that if I could give this book 10 stars, I would! I love a book that revolves around food and is so well-written that I can smell and taste the food the author writes about. Emoni’s world is so vibrant, you feel like you’re living through her. This story is a beautiful coming of age story, with a strong emphasis on family, culture and inner strength. I loved it and highly recommend it.
Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
This was such a cute story. I did struggle to get through it for some reason. I just didn’t reach for it like I do other books, but I do keep thinking about it now that I’ve finished it. I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads, so I liked it, but I didn’t LOVE it, like I was expecting to. I love that it is a LGBTQ+ romance novel, that it’s basically set in an alternate timeline, and I love that it filled me with hope for how the world could be. It was great escapism, and I recommend it! It was just the tiniest bit cheesy, and I think that’s what kept me from giving it 5 stars.
City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert
The description for City of Girls says it’s “a delicious novel of glamour, sex, and adventure, about a young woman discovering that you don’t have to be a good girl to be a good person.” I knew I wanted to read it ASAP, so it was my official road trip book. It’s a great summer book. Not too heavy, just enough glamour and romance to keep you intrigued, and well-written.
That’s it! Overall, I’ve read some really good books so far this summer, and I have a few more lined up for July that I’m excited for also. Mainly Searching for Sylvie Lee by Jean Kwok and The Editor by Steven Rowley.
